I am not Apple fanboy nor hater. 5 years ago I was tired of maintaining two desktops, one Linux and one Windows, so I switched. I am pretty happy with this decision. I got compromise, few things from one world others from second.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I need to edit a video from time to time. Nothing fancy. Usually it is just trimming and exporting in format that can be accepted on variety of stock agencies. I never thought I can justify buying professional video editing software for hundreds of dollars to be able to submit 10 seconds videos to microstock. I tried many free alternatives.<a href="http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html" target="_blank"> MPEG Streamclip</a> is one of great examples of tools I was trying to use. For conversions you can use <a href="http://www.ffmpeg.org/" target="_blank">FFmpeg</a> or <a href="https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/CLIGuide" target="_blank">HandBrakeCLI </a>whcih work almost on any platform. These tools are sufficient for most of my needs but sometimes you need to correct exposure, white balance or crooked horizon. I tried to find a good free video editor but nothing really worked. I always ended up with free iMovie which comes with Mac OS X.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
[RANT MODE ON]<br />
This piece of software comes from the company that supposedly makes the most intuitive GUIs in the world. Give me a break, why most of the simple tasks are so painfully difficult and slow here? I just want to open a single file, make few adjustments and save it. No, you cannot do that. You have to create an event, import your images into it, create project and add images from event into it. Then you are allowed to edit video. Did I mentioned that all steps before are excruciatingly slow?<br />
[RANT MODE OFF]</blockquote>
I wanted to rotate videos by arbitrary angle which is not supported by iMovie anyway so it lead me to search alternatives again. Nothing really changes in free area, I could find the way to rotate using FFmpeg. Eventually one of the searches on rotating videos showed link to YouTube with instructions how to do it in Adobe Premiere Elements. I decided to download trial version of the latest. It was showing ugly stripe with warning that I am using trial version but I was shocked how easy it was. I can type angle in degrees. Did I mentioned that it was extremely fast on the same machine where iMovie was crawling? The moral of the story is that I should try it earlier instead of trying desperately to find free solution.<br />

Getty Images is biggest stock agency in the world. Flickr is popular photo sharing service for amateur photographers. For many of Flickr contributors it was entry to the world of stock photography. There are at least three parties that will be affected by this event.<br />
<br />
Getty Images sifted through enormous collection of images from photo enthusiast from all over the world. I heard some statements that they check 90 million photos. Some of them were invited to this program and they ended up with 900 thousands of sell-able photos. A lot of work to get 1% return so it is most like why they decided it cost them too much.<br />
<br />
<iframe frameborder="0" height="407" scrolling="no" src="//embed.gettyimages.com/embed/85426520?et=zheIYLnA3kmH4zInjvpyhQ&sig=M-JEaZcOMMHe_DSGpTiIyruXHkQ2lWEmyztgv7IThAM=" width="507"></iframe><br />
For Flickr is most likely very bad news. If above percentage was accurate it means they do not have very good content to start with so if rumors are true that they ended up this partnership because they want to start sell images on their own it is not going to be easy. Also the good ones Getty selected are probably not available cause usually contributors had to sign exclusive agreements. They ended up with pile of crap. I do not know what are strategic plans for Flickr but so far they got really bad record. At first, Flickr started as photo sharing site. There were many website like this before where contributors can comments on each others photos. Flickr was just better version of them, social aspects were done very well. It had lots of followers until it was acquired by Yahoo. Then of course users expected that it would try to somehow monetize on their participation. In many ways it was what Instagram was before acquisition, largely used platform for sharing images. It was long before mobile was popular. Some people got upset and left some started Flickr clones. Anyway popularity was fading. Then Instagram and Pinterest popularity exploded and Flickr was not coolest kid on the block. For many years nothing really changed. Website went through some cosmetic changes, added additional APIs, mobile apps, etc. Facebook and Google+ could do they same, store and share photos. So what was the purpose of having Flickr account? Partnership with Getty was actually giving Flickr new purpose in life. Every contributor got chance to sell their work.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/melastmohican/11253603123/in/set-72157638442168546/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe>
Contributors might have various experience about this partnership. For some it was the first time their work was commercially available. For others signing exclusive contract with Getty was not so attractive. If you are already selling your work you do not want put all your eggs in one basket. Anyway they got a pass to enter Getty Images club which is usually closed for strangers. So right now when partnerships ended they got their foot inside. If they try to apply on their own they might not be accepted. If we put aside question if it is desirable to be Getty contributor nowadays, Flickr contributors might become normal members of this club. So the news is mostly positive for people who were accepted through this partnership even if Flickr ship will sink.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013439569448452949.post-50680402920387580502014-03-05T15:10:00.000-08:002014-03-05T15:10:34.085-08:00Getty Images' Embedded Viewer<span style="background-color: #fefefe; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px;">Today Getty Images introduced an option to embed images for non-commercial use via an embedded viewer. Today I am going to look at it from purely hardware perspective. Thanks to <a href="http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/" target="_blank">ExifTool</a>, free software program for reading image metadata, I can analyze information stored in my files.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">

<br />
I have been Canon user for 20 years and when I started working with microstock photos I was on my second digital camera Canon EOS 20D. Now I am shooting with Olympus OM-D E-M1. I tried submitting images from point & shoot cameras, smartphones and even some old stuff scanned from slides (which probably are not included in this analysis cause I did not fill EXIF data).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtRLg73InLsFnoSuKOn6h3UGENmf4acie_4-h8vM-HSMy5ltUMSm6uZdReKQ5KJBaslgnol3QWXMtq229GIqtAd4l5H1RrD-Hi5Oabn8ocquBjl2BbwTDOKGTMYpymRr1rmncWuqdJ5_66/s1600/CameraMake.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtRLg73InLsFnoSuKOn6h3UGENmf4acie_4-h8vM-HSMy5ltUMSm6uZdReKQ5KJBaslgnol3QWXMtq229GIqtAd4l5H1RrD-Hi5Oabn8ocquBjl2BbwTDOKGTMYpymRr1rmncWuqdJ5_66/s1600/CameraMake.png" height="181" width="400" /></a></div>
I am not tracking success rates because different agencies got totally different criteria and same photo might be accepted in one and rejected in others. Surprisingly I tried to sneak 2 photos from Palm Pre+, which I think was 4 megapixel camera, long before agencies start accepting photos from mobile devices ;-)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEKrqaqI1wIwz0K1X8uSvdwWfSG_COZKZJycO-CD5JsSaiy6s8dgJDaMba_oDjhSa0vmZ__Bm6snW3iqLujg-fQueaENIuzru-D3oI9QxYzDR_K-Nk6yQkZbuKcNWS1JMaH4_IMtAm2iM4/s1600/CameraModel.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEKrqaqI1wIwz0K1X8uSvdwWfSG_COZKZJycO-CD5JsSaiy6s8dgJDaMba_oDjhSa0vmZ__Bm6snW3iqLujg-fQueaENIuzru-D3oI9QxYzDR_K-Nk6yQkZbuKcNWS1JMaH4_IMtAm2iM4/s1600/CameraModel.png" height="232" width="400" /></a></div>
Current minimum requirements on most agencies are 6 megapixels so most of modern smartphones and point & shooters would pass this but it is much harder with this type of devices to produce images less than ideal light conditions. Most important piece of hardware, optics, on these devices is fixed. What would you rather have best camera body with crappy lens or crappy body with best lens?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgh9n36FrAn94pa-dIGHchC-X0Jh1IXh4rHFVqbV6D7aw7yO7Xuu352Eo9QtG99_FgVkTzP3UWxBzk1Wtor02UeKrNBn__YfTUXrGAtoH1XAK02mU6eSoVwecpD6VJYUbR9YLPHeAV7b3J/s1600/LensModel.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgh9n36FrAn94pa-dIGHchC-X0Jh1IXh4rHFVqbV6D7aw7yO7Xuu352Eo9QtG99_FgVkTzP3UWxBzk1Wtor02UeKrNBn__YfTUXrGAtoH1XAK02mU6eSoVwecpD6VJYUbR9YLPHeAV7b3J/s1600/LensModel.png" height="175" width="400" /></a></div>
Since most of my experience was with Canon gear I can only tell that I went through 3 bodies during this time but in the same period I tried 12 different lens. My first professional lens was EF 17-40mm F/4L and on cropped sensor it was fantastic lens. When switched to full frame I noticed that at 17mm people look comical so I switched to 24-105mm F/4L. I never really invested in faster lens because before microstock I was doing mostly landscape photography which employes tripod at most times.<br />
<br />
Now I switched to different system and I am trying to figure out which lens I would need/like to have. Micro four thirds lens are usually half weight and half price comparing to Canon equivalents so I most likely end up with better ones. I read a lot of good reviews about Olympus 12-40mm F/2.8 PRO lens so it was my first choice when I was buying OM-D EM-1. Is it as good as Canon's EF 24-70mm f/2.8L time will show but for start it is half of the price :-)<br />
<br />
Now let's bring subject of low light performance. I switched from full frame 5d mark II to half size sensor. I was wondering if this would have affect on noise of my photos and in result higher probability of rejections? Let's look at the data, do I need to have camera that produces low noise images at ISO 3200?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ2ELSkSAp9iz7V27H2fcnHIaVh_OHK_rcMt5y73XVulnqCCix8sGYzSCg8H1rYvGTOilqTImI_SNwsTeQA112kj9qX5OMKsedir4_f3wu03S1uJmrOLJvviuctGmHOaa5ERSMemR1CTMl/s1600/ISO.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ2ELSkSAp9iz7V27H2fcnHIaVh_OHK_rcMt5y73XVulnqCCix8sGYzSCg8H1rYvGTOilqTImI_SNwsTeQA112kj9qX5OMKsedir4_f3wu03S1uJmrOLJvviuctGmHOaa5ERSMemR1CTMl/s1600/ISO.png" height="193" width="400" /></a></div>
I shoot 80% of my photos below ISO 800. I need 1600 or higher for around 5% of my images. I can live with this :-)<br />
<br />
Going back to lens, which one do I need? It seems that 24-105mm was very convenient for me. From the data I have I cannot really tell if I got any favorite focal length.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQFRbo-fxiT7ofzXPsAZ8wW6HJGrEgAAh3rmbd-skvy-ArzNPwV1obbKBMyAgfQ2HFC15NzDNV1FGB0_PTpzgMIkGWNNo-1Y_Ytngh_OBAH_ThO0ZyWohyC7MNKrHE9GwG8KPol0JN6q8R/s1600/FocalLength.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQFRbo-fxiT7ofzXPsAZ8wW6HJGrEgAAh3rmbd-skvy-ArzNPwV1obbKBMyAgfQ2HFC15NzDNV1FGB0_PTpzgMIkGWNNo-1Y_Ytngh_OBAH_ThO0ZyWohyC7MNKrHE9GwG8KPol0JN6q8R/s1600/FocalLength.png" height="320" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Besides the fact that I am often going to extremes on my zoom lens other data is scattered all over the place. I was not using my tele zoom lens to often too.<br />
<br />
When I looked at aperture data it seems like I am staying between 4 and 11 most of the time but I guess that two of my main lens were F/4 so I could not go wider.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguSiQs7q-pEYggzw9JvE4Bei1zNH9KGql-cK3IMwgPta_R-tJcZCPeaGnjcXCvhhdVu0pzxJvz3YlsuSZWsdR3JIfJTQyWwsGawHgBgAil2r41y9Vx34Fpb9ItUSXS1Gyn7Kh9T95rDBzf/s1600/Aperture.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguSiQs7q-pEYggzw9JvE4Bei1zNH9KGql-cK3IMwgPta_R-tJcZCPeaGnjcXCvhhdVu0pzxJvz3YlsuSZWsdR3JIfJTQyWwsGawHgBgAil2r41y9Vx34Fpb9ItUSXS1Gyn7Kh9T95rDBzf/s1600/Aperture.png" height="315" width="400" /></a></div>
Exposure time data shows that I could live with shutter speed shorter that 1/2000s and barely do long exposure over 1 minute :-)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Eventually I decided to get FL-600R flash to make sure I can do similar things with new camera. Of course I do not have same range of lens for new system so making switch decision will be based on partial data.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UxTzkmQidt8/UunjPJ2iVII/AAAAAAAGPvg/eRcIMvHqfto/s1600/20140129-202016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UxTzkmQidt8/UunjPJ2iVII/AAAAAAAGPvg/eRcIMvHqfto/s1600/20140129-202016.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
After unpacking Olympus flash I compared size of these two devices. Definitively Speedlite is stronger and bigger but if FL-600R takes same amount of batteries its recycle time must be pretty good. With less power I might not be able to flash across big rooms but this is not what I am doing very often anyway.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DNYzwHB63KQ/UuniFa37wBI/AAAAAAAGPto/4vadvQuBj4k/s1600/20140129-200953.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DNYzwHB63KQ/UuniFa37wBI/AAAAAAAGPto/4vadvQuBj4k/s1600/20140129-200953.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
When I got chance to bounce light off the white ceiling it looks pretty good. Sometimes I cannot do this so I decided to get some sort of reflector. As you can see there are velcros on my Speedlite. I was suing <a href="http://store.lumiquest.com/lumiquest-promax-system/" target="_blank">LumiQuest ProMax</a> system with it. It has a holder for multiple reflector and frankly it was to complicated so I was using it infrequently. Especially since I got off camera flash bracket which seems to work better. Anyway I wanted something that can be easier attached to flash. I looked at flash soft boxes and and accidentally I found something looking pretty interesting: <a href="http://www.rogueflash.com/collections/rogue-flashbenders/products/rogue-flashbender-small-positionable-reflector" target="_blank">Rogue FlashBender</a>. It can be quickly attached without any velcros. Also you can bend it anyway you want, sometime it could be faster than tilting whole flash head.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-18Reooi8gKQ/Uunijm3b3DI/AAAAAAAGPuY/uFZgXdBRLVA/s1600/20140129-201328.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-18Reooi8gKQ/Uunijm3b3DI/AAAAAAAGPuY/uFZgXdBRLVA/s1600/20140129-201328.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Great little bonus, you can wrap it and make quick snoot :-)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013439569448452949.post-10066801202199217222014-01-23T12:22:00.000-08:002014-01-23T12:22:06.374-08:00Big switchI am testing new Olympus mirrorless camera, OM-D E-M1. Most likely I will change system, after almost 20 years with Canon. It is not going to be breaking news like when famous photographer switched from Nikon to Canon :-)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rZNnrYbFdzc/UuCqGGgQrMI/AAAAAAAGPYw/xKntGcmAi1E/s1600/20140122-210115.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rZNnrYbFdzc/UuCqGGgQrMI/AAAAAAAGPYw/xKntGcmAi1E/s1600/20140122-210115.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So far after 3 days of evening testing at home I could say that transition would require some effort. First of all I do not have all comparable lens with new system. I do not have decent flash unit so I have to make a decision based on what I can see now. For a while I got access to Olympus PEN camera so I am not entirely lost in their menu system. The advantage of OM-D is that it has all the buttons like DSLR so I do not have to dig into menu every time I need to make small adjustment to settings. In fact it probably got more that my Canon.<br />
<br />
Lets start comparing. One of main reason for switch was size and weight. At 895g Canon is twice heavier than Olympus (443g). If you add professional L lens to the package, like EF 24-105mm it is additional 670g. It is again almost double of ED 12-40mm PRO lens which is 381g. So we start with 1565g vs 824g. If I go for a hike in a mountains every gram matters :-) I think one of the reasons I was suffering on my Mt Whitney hike was the weight of my camera bag it was 5lbs in addition to my 30lbs backpack.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B90bjjIjC90/T_po33_MPbI/AAAAAAAFM2w/qPUcruqt6ZI/s1600/20120704-100420.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B90bjjIjC90/T_po33_MPbI/AAAAAAAFM2w/qPUcruqt6ZI/s1600/20120704-100420.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
Next "big thing" is sensor size. It seems that recently people believe that everybody needs full frame sensor camera. Yes full frame sensors have better noise performance but if simple bigger was better we would be running around with Hasselblads and I do not see it would happen any time soon :-). I bet current technology allows to put medium format sensor into smaller body but you cannot bend laws of physics it would require bigger and heavier lens. If only sensor is compared, yes 5Dmk2 has better one. I am not sensor expert so I checked <a href="http://www.dxomark.com/en/About/Sensor-scores/Sensor-Score-Essentials" target="_blank">DxOMark Sensor Scores</a><u> </u>for both camera sensors:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" border="2">

</tbody></table>
<br />
What does it mean? E-M1 only looses in Sports category. Let me put it into perspective. Why people need high ISO? Because when they shoot action hand held and they need higher shutter speed. I am not doing that. Shooting my daughter at playground does not count :-) Besides even with my current 5Dmk2 I would need faster lens anyway. If I disregard Sports category sensors are pretty much comparable.<br />
Let me go a little bit further. Is 5Dmk2 with F4 lens at 800 ISO comparable to E-M1 with F2.8 lens plus IBIS? Because of camera weight and in body stabilization I most likely can go ISO 400 or less when shooting handheld and still got similar results. You cannot just compare bare sensors, lens and other features might totally change the equation. This is main reason I got E-M1 first. I will check if it can fit the type of photography I am doing and if answer is yes I can sell all my Canon gear. If it fails the test I can still return it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013439569448452949.post-46158883146807776172012-01-12T06:49:00.000-08:002013-07-11T16:17:16.793-07:00MOTOACTV - my first sports watchI was thinking for while about buying GPS-enabled cycling computer and <a href="https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=160&pID=36728">Garmin Enge 500</a> was my favorite. I wanted to try my routes and connect other sensors via ANT+. Obviously Garmin device provides all these features. I can connect cadence and heart rate sensors. I can even upload it to my <a href="http://www.bodymedia.com/">Bodymedia</a> Activity Manager via <a href="http://connect.garmin.com/">Garmin Connect</a>. Then few weeks ago Motorola revealed MOTOACTV device, Android based sports watch with music player. Moreover it has ANT+ and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth_low_energy">Bluetooth LE</a> so potentially I can use more accessories than with Edge 500. It also has WiFi and FM Radio. Apparently you can also <a href="http://www.cmw.me/?q=node/55">root</a> the device and install some other Android apps. I guess these two devices are hard to compare. Edge is truly cycling computer while Motoactv is a hybrid. I decided to get Motoactv cause it can be used for other activities beside cycling and in theory I can expand it by installing additional apps in future.<br />

I got it yesterday and it was pretty easy to setup. If you want to use WiFi you have to install desktop software in order to add networks (you cannot type passwords on this device). I tried desktop software on Windows and OS X and functionality is similar. I charged it for couple hours as directed before I tried it outside. I must say that GPS lock is instant in comparison to my Palm Pre+ which quite often cannot sync at all. I guess it is what you get when you got GPS integrated with a phone receiver. What I liked Motoactv is auto start/stop workout feature. It automatically sense that device is not moving and suspends logging data until you start moving again. I was not always sure about my average speed provided by <a href="http://www.smartrunner.com/">SmartRunner</a> app on my phone cause it kept logging even if I stopped. I hope it will be possible to install Android version of this app on Motoactv some day to compare. After you are done with you workout you may upload data to tracking website. You might do it wirelessly with WiFi or connect to the desktop with USB. Wireless option is great when you do not have your computer with you but still want to upload and see results. I would probably need ANT+ USB stick if I chose Garmin. I am still waiting for delivery of heart rate monitor to see how ANT+ integration works.</div>

Thanks to <a href="http://theunofficialkindlefireblog.com/">The Unofficial Kindle Fire Blog</a> <a href="http://theunofficialkindlefireblog.com/2011/12/how-to-install-googles-android-market-on-your-kindle-fire/">article</a> I was convinced that I can unroot it later.<br/><br/>[caption id="attachment_914" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Android SDK Manager"]<a href="http://jurgielewicz.info/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/AndroidSDKManager.png"><img class="size-medium wp-image-914" title="Android SDK Manager" src="http://jurgielewicz.info/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/AndroidSDKManager-300x236.png" alt="Android SDK Manager" width="300" height="236" /></a>[/caption]<br/><br/><div>I already got few first steps covered cause I got <a href="http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk-7u1-download-513651.html">Java Development Kit</a>, <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=19">Microsoft .NET Framework</a> and <a href="http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html">Android SDK</a> installed. I had to download <a href="http://shortfuse.org/">SuperOneClick</a>. Since I haven't done any development on Android besides trying to setup some samples to run on emulator my KIndle Fire was not detected. <a href="https://developer.amazon.com/help/faq.html">Amazon Appstore Developer FAQ</a> got precise description (<a href="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/sdk/Connecting_your_Kindle_Fire_to_ADB.pdf">PDF</a>) how to make it happen. The missing step was to update USB driver in Windows Device Manager with the one that Google provides with Android SDK. Unfortunately reboot is required on Windows. After that I could follow steps, run SuperOneClick and reboot Kindle Fire.</div><br/><div><br/><br/>[caption id="attachment_915" align="aligncenter" width="175" caption="Android Market"]<a href="http://jurgielewicz.info/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/device-2011-12-16-142528.png"><img class="size-medium wp-image-915" title="Android Market" src="http://jurgielewicz.info/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/device-2011-12-16-142528-175x300.png" alt="Android Market" width="175" height="300" /></a>[/caption]<br/><br/></div><br/><div>Installing Android Market was actually a little bit complicated. Again I got few steps covered by my previous attempts. I already tried to sideload some apps and this option is enabled on my device. In addition it is possible to install GoogleServicesFramework.apk without rooting device so I did it when I was loading some other Google apps. I only needed actual Market app (<a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?rest29bka7mm0ck">Vending.apk</a>)and something given in this recipe: <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19427314#post19427314">MarketOpener.apk</a>. Up to this point it was going according to the plan. Then next step filed. I do not know what is wrong with current version of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004VMY62Q/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=tukfb-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004VMY62Q">File Expert</a> available on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/mobile-apps/b?_encoding=UTF8&node=2350149011&ref_=topnav_storetab_mas%23&tag=tukfb-20&ie=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957">Amazon Appstore</a> but it does not properly copy files to /system/app directory. Be aware that version 4.0.3 is not working with his recipe. I was trying to copy or cut Vending.apk from my Download directory and paste it to /system/app but it did not happen. I found <a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5zcGVlZHNvZnR3YXJlLnJvb3RleHBsb3JlciJd">Root Exploder</a> on this <a href="http://android-softwares.blogspot.com/2011/11/root-explorer-file-manager-2172-apk.html">blog</a>. It was able to complete what File Expert could not do. I was able to change permissions of Vending.apk and install MarketOpener.apk. After rebooting I connected my device to my desktop machine and run SuperOneClick to unroot it. Now Androit Makert is functional. Of course it can only allow to install applications that Google marks as compatible with Kindle Fire (sometimes Amazon marks app compatible while Google claims is not).</div><br/><br/>[ad#adsense-1]Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013439569448452949.post-90160755455468579732011-11-29T04:41:00.000-08:002013-07-11T12:19:20.413-07:00First real problems with Kindle FireI must admit I has been trying different apps like crazy, downloading games for my daughter, trying to side load Google Apps, trying if "officially" unsupported apps really cannot run, etc. So far it was pretty nice experience. If something does not work I simply removed it from device.<br/><br/>My first problem happen during when my Thanksgiving trip to Lake Tahoe in Sierra Nevada. Wi-Fi in hotel was slower than mobile connection. I got couple apps stuck in install in progress state. There is no way to stop it, uninstall them or re-download. When I returned home I tried to contact Amazon Customer Service but so far I could find a competent representative. Eventually they asked me to send logs from device. Guess what, their mailbox was overflown with emails and message was returned :-) As a bonus I learned that if you type ;dm in a search box it dumps logs to KindleLogs directory.<br/><br/>Another problem bricked my device for a while. I am using <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Zoodles-Kid-Mode-Play-Learn/dp/B0052UOONC" title="Kid Mode">Kid Mode</a> app which hijacks home button so kids cannot go out and do other things. It crashed and after rebooting I got blank white screen instead of Amazon Launcher. Again I had no lack with customer support call. They asked me to fully charge device, reboot and call them back in few hours. In meanwhile I figured out that if I kill Kid Mode app, release Home button from it I eventually got asked to choose default app to be associated with Home button. I chose Launcher and voila I am back. Good thing is that Kid Mode can reestablish child lock when I run it again so everything is back to normal.<br/><br/>[ad#adsense-1]Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013439569448452949.post-9099212853598991172011-11-22T07:05:00.000-08:002013-07-11T12:18:55.411-07:00Google.ru celebrates 60th anniversary of Stanislaw Lem first book<a href="http://www.lem.pl/lemopedia/Astronauts_Polish_Czytelnik_1951" title="The Astronauts">The Astronauts</a> (in Polish Astronauci) is the first science fiction novel by Polish writer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanis%C5%82aw_Lem" title="Stanislaw Lem">Stanisław Lem</a> published as a book, in 1951. When you connect device with USB cable you can use ddms utility from Android SDK to take screenshots of device screen without rooting it. If you already have debugging environment set up all you need is to run this utility and take screenshot any time you want. If you do not have it read this article from Pigs, Gourds and Wikis blog.<br/><br/><a href="http://jurgielewicz.info/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/device-2011-11-21-221819.png"><img src="http://jurgielewicz.info/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/device-2011-11-21-221819-175x300.png" alt="" title="device-2011-11-21-221819" width="175" height="300" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-900" /></a><br/><br/>Hopefully soon we can hear that somebody discovers how to make it on device without debugging it :-)<br/><br/><br/>[ad#adsense-1]Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013439569448452949.post-36951949354071033202011-11-18T03:50:00.000-08:002013-07-11T12:18:55.400-07:00Google Apps on Kindle Fire[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="307" caption="xda-developers"]<a href="http://www.xda-developers.com/android/kindle-fire-now-rocking-android-market-and-the-rest-of-the-google-apps/"><img title="xda-developers" src="http://www.xda-developers.com/wp-content/themes/XDA/images/logo.jpg?139d23" alt="xda-developers" width="307" height="41" /></a>[/caption]<br/><br/>Thanks to <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1349902">xda-developers forum</a> I got most of Google Apps working on Kindle Fire without rooting a device. I subscribed to two trials of cooking magazines cause it seems like most practical things I might use.<br/><br/>[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="470" caption="Kindle Fire Newsstand"]<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000719641"><img title="Kindle Fire Newsstand" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/kindle/otter/dp/KO-aag-mag._V164818043_.jpg" alt="Kindle Fire Newsstand" width="470" height="240" /></a>[/caption]<br/><br/>Selection was quite limited so my favorite <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Cuisine-at-Home/dp/B002MRSLK0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321557932&sr=8-1">Cuisine At Home</a> was not available. I chose <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Bon-Appetit/dp/B005PZVB8K/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1321557857&sr=1-10">Bon Apetit</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Everyday-Food/dp/B005WYTFSM/ref=sr_1_14?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1321557123&sr=1-14">Everyday Food</a>. First impression is that they look quite like real versions. But there is a catch, all this pretty photos take a lot of space and on digital reader space is limited so I hope that there is a way to store everything in Amazon Cloud otherwise if I got couple subscriptions I will run out of space pretty soon. Second, I do like that half of the pages are ads. Did not I paid for subscription? Why I have to still download all this commercial payload? In traditional newspaper model for years people tolerated this double dipping model cause it did not cost them money. When you got newspaper which 20% is actual content you most likely discard unwanted ad pages. You cannot do that with digital file. First it is in one piece, second, it is DRM protected. In result you got crippled product and you have to pay for storage or bandwith. I think publishers need to change their distribution model if they want to be success in digital age. Right now they just repackage their current junk and hope people will buy it as they used to.<br/><br/>[ad#adsense-1]Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013439569448452949.post-61639083299812121712011-11-17T04:35:00.000-08:002013-07-11T12:18:55.367-07:00My short wishlist for Kindle FireI have played with Kindle Fire for two evenings my experience is quite positive. It does a lot of things right but there is a small number of things I wish to be there but I could not find a solution for it so far.<br/><br/>[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="470" caption="Kindle Fire"]<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0051VVOB2/ref=s9_simh_bw_p350_d0_g349_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=0TXBNNCZB5S6DJ861MHD&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1294530842&pf_rd_i=133141011"><img title="Kindle Fire" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/kindle/otter/dp/KO-aag-cloud._V164818045_.jpg" alt="Kindle Fire" width="470" height="240" /></a>[/caption]<br/><ol><br/> <li>Some way to group/organize apps. Maybe folders or pages but if typical user downloads a lot of stuff in a first week it is pretty messy. Maybe it is there but I haven't read manual :-)</li><br/> <li>Cloud printing solution. I wish it could be easy to print from this device. Some apps claim support of <a href="http://www.google.com/cloudprint">Google Cloud Print</a> but reviews do not confirm that. I need to do more research on that.</li><br/> <li>Screen shots, the best thing would be system wide gesture similar to Print Screen command on Windows. Right now I am not going to root my brand new device in order to check some screen capturing apps.</li><br/> <li>Screen mirroring to allow stream my Prime videos on big TV in my living room. Something similar to AirPlay. Tried <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Bianor-Inc-iMediaShare-Premium/dp/B004ZA9HB4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1321558003&sr=8-2">iMediaShare</a> app andit islimited to it's own channels. AppleTV support is in Beta and for me only worked with Picasa photos. I was not able to stream movies. On the other hand DLNA support seems to be be pretty good. Worked with my Samsung TV without any problems. I am still waiting for <a href="http://www.amazon.com/DoubleTwist-Corp-doubleTwist-with-AirSync/dp/B004SE9HXU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1321558033&sr=1-1">doubleTwist + AirSync</a> update. Right now it is not compatible with Kindle Fire and it is hard to tell if it can mirror screen.</li><br/></ol><br/><br/>[ad#adsense-1]Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013439569448452949.post-90433271995021130132011-11-16T03:51:00.000-08:002013-07-11T12:18:55.363-07:00Kindle Fire Initial ThoughtsYesterday I received my pre-ordered Kindle Fire. First I must state that I have no prior experience with tablets or iOS so I am not going to compare my experience with Kindle Fire to anything else.<br/><br/>[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="470" caption="Kindle Fire"]<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0051VVOB2/ref=famstripe_kf"><img title="Kindle Fire" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/kindle/otter/dp/KO-aag-apps._V162619036_.jpg" alt="Kindle Fire" width="470" height="240" /></a>[/caption]<br/><br/><strong>Packaging.</strong><br/>I was surprised with minimalistic packaging. When you open box that Amazon ships you will find only slate wrapped in plastic and small card. The card describes how to turn device on and how to unlock the screen. That's it. No user manuals, warranty cards, special offers. You also get small micro USB power supply but I bet you can charge Kindle from any USB port on your computer if you already got this type of cable.<br/><br/><strong>Initial setup.</strong><br/>First step shown after pressing power button (I am not sure, but most likely device was only in sleep mode) is Wi-Fi setup. It worked without problems with my router. So far I haven't seen any connection drops. I got NetgearWNR2200 in 300Mbps mode and AppleTV2 is constantly dropping connections so I was skeptical but KF seems to handle it better. Second step was downloading of OS update and it took a while but no problems to report. At the end I asked about my identity. It looks like it was preloaded with my data so I did not have to enter anything about my Amazon account. It just registered my device.<br/><br/><strong>User experience.</strong><br/>Finally it shows main screen which looks like bookshelf. Kindle Fire does not have any buttons so most of apps got think belt at the bottom of the screen to activate toolbar. It is not a big deal when you get used to it but some applications not written for Kindle Fire might have part of their screen covered by it. Device comes preloaded with all Amazon Android apps and without any Google apps. If you stay in Amazon ecosystem it might be sufficient. So far I cannot tell when I need to get something from outside. One of the applications I was counting to get was doubleTwist which is not supported yet.<br/><br/><strong>Cloud.</strong><br/>When you looks at your shelf you might noticed that some stuff is on your device but a lot of media is offloaded to Amazon Cloud. I am ok with it. I already uploaded my music to their cloud so I can stream it instantly on this device. All my Kindle books also appeared automatically but when I tried to open Kindle downloaded a book from net. When you buy app from you desktop computer browser it will end up in a cloud too. You have to install it to the device later.<br/><br/><strong>1-Click everywhere.</strong><br/>If you are Amazon Prime user and got it turned on you will noticed that it's extremely easy to shop with this device. It never asks you any questions so I am a little concerned if I can give it to my daughter. She might buy something without even knowing it.<br/><br/><strong>Conclusion.</strong><br/>I read reviews comparing this device to other tablets claiming slow performance and limited experience. Yes it is not iPad2 or any high-end Android tablet but if you are only interested in consuming media and you are Amazon customer it could be sufficient. I haven't tested any games that require a lot of GPU power but for casual gamer mostly playing flash games on internet it was fast enough. There are many things I haven't touched so far so later I might have different opinion. Right now I think that for average consumer it will be sufficient.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013439569448452949.post-65148763321180135642011-08-04T14:52:00.000-07:002013-07-11T12:18:55.358-07:00Extended license on Shutterstock - Racetrack PlayaOne of my favorite photos, I have been there only two times so far and this photo comes from my first trip. It is two hours drive one way from Ubehebe Crater on a pretty rough road which does not require 4x4 but if you do not have it you would be extremely slow. Still it was 4th best month overall and 3rd best on SS. DT bounced back from the bottom, it was best month for them this year. 123RF was on the other hand having 2nd worst month of this year. FT was also down and IS almost repeated result from last four months. SXP continues to disappoint and it was beaten by CSP. Veer and BS added few sales this month.<br/><table width="210" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><br/><tbody><br/><tr><br/><td valign="bottom" nowrap="nowrap" width="67"><strong>Jully For the later one it was actually best month this year. These two delivered almost 80% of total revenue. Rest of the top 5 was around 15% and way below last month’s results. SXP is slowly falling into non-existence. ThinkStock earning are roughly 20% of what SXP used to be.<br/><br/>Comparing RPD we again see increase at SS and 123RF and drop on 4 other top agencies. Since on most of the sites I do not have enough volume to properly judge these numbers I can only talk about trend here. Also I am trying to get out from partner programs on IS which immediately caused huge jump in RPD there since subs from ThinkStock are no longer reported for them.<br/><table border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><br/><tbody><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">May 2011</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">May</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">May/Apr</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">RPD</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">SS</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">57.87%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">132.17%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.65</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">123RF</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">21.59%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">134.67%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">1.49</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">FT</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">6.44%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">95.86%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.50</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">DT</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">6.12%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">71.68%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.81</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">IS</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">4.59%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">90.05%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">1.01</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">SXP</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">2.11%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">84.85%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.25</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">CS</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">0.69%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">300.0%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">1.13</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top"> </td><br/><td width="90" valign="top"> </td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">97.58%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.72</td><br/></tr><br/></tbody><br/></table><br/>[caption id="attachment_870" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="June 2011 Microstock"]<a href="http://jurgielewicz.info/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011JUNMicrostock.png"><img class="size-medium wp-image-870" title="June 2011 Microstock" src="http://jurgielewicz.info/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011JUNMicrostock-300x214.png" alt="June 2011 Microstock" width="300" height="214" /></a>[/caption]Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013439569448452949.post-26310393596874359592011-06-22T02:52:00.000-07:002013-07-11T12:18:55.333-07:00CEL sold on 123rfFor quite long time I have not seen any extended license sold on 123RF. It was quite a surprise to find out that it was also best month overall this year. It was mostly because unexpected extended licenses from Veer. It also shows how week are my sales at other agencies. It is so easy to grab second spot if there are extended licenses sold. SS was first as usual but it is quite interesting how others are trending. 123RF keeps going up every month and this one was actually best in current year. FT peaked in April and May was slightly worse but still way better than at the beginning of this year. DT also had best month this year. SXP is just so unpredictable. I am not even sure if they are able to count sales properly since every month when it is time to report they post and change result couple times. On other fronts I see almost no movements, I can sell a few photos a month or none.<br/><br/> <br/><table border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><br/><tbody><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">May 2011</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">May</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">May/Apr</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">RPD</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">SS</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">42.72%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">90.84%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.53</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">Veer</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">16.81%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">16300.00%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">11.41</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">123RF</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">15.64%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">165.17%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.76</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">DT</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">8.33%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">183.68%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.86</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">FT</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">6.55%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">88.61%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.60</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">IS</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">4.97%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">116.74%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">1.30</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">SXP</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">2.43%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">117.86%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.25</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">CSP</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">1.19%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">1350.00%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">1.25</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">BS</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">0.74%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">125.00%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.63</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">MSP</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">0.38%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">100.00%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">065</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top">CS</td><br/><td width="90" valign="top">0.22%</td><br/><td width="96" valign="top"> </td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.25</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><td width="115" valign="top"> </td><br/><td width="90" valign="top"> </td><br/><td width="96" valign="top">130.20%</td><br/><td width="60" valign="top">0.71</td><br/></tr><br/></tbody><br/></table><br/> <br/><br/>[caption id="attachment_862" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Microstock 2011-05"]<a href="http://jurgielewicz.info/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/2011MAYMicrostock.png"><img src="http://jurgielewicz.info/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/2011MAYMicrostock-300x185.png" alt="Microstock 2011-05" title="Microstock 2011-05" width="300" height="185" class="size-medium wp-image-862" /></a>[/caption]<br/><br/>[ad#adsense-1]Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06346155483215067012noreply@blogger.com0
